Introduction
Mintek has an exciting opportunity for the Executive Manager: Mineralogy (EM: MND) who is responsible to manage the Mineralogy Division and execute the long and short term plans in support of the overall Mintek strategy. It is a market driven role and seeks to align strategy with Mintek’s mandate global trends and requirements from the mining industry. The position plays a critical role in ensuring that the Division remains responsive to the evolving needs of the mining and minerals industry and continues to contribute meaningfully to Mintek’s research, development and innovation agenda
Job description

LEADERSHIP
• Ethical leadership
• Ensure the alignment of the divisional strategy with Mintek’s mandate and the strategies of external stakeholders e.g. government departments.
• Implementation of the divisional strategy and ensuring that the division maintain its reputation and lead in its offerings to industry.
• Ensure that there is adequate funding for all the activities of the division
• Ensure adequate staffing for the achievement of departmental objectives
STRATEGY
• Patriciate in the development of Mintek strategy
• Align the division’s strategy with the overall Mintek strategy
• Identify and work towards exploiting opportunities for revenue generation.
PLANNING
• Ensure that the necessary resources are available and allocated to give effect to the strategy.
• Ensure planning for future skills requirements, career advancement and retention of staff.
• Ensure that there are concrete plans in place to generate research and commercial funding and that there is a pipeline of proposals and projects in place.
• Ensure that there is a clear marketing plan that seeks to generate funding to fund the projects of the division.
FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY
• Drive the divisional financial sustainability through effective operations
• Balance the RDI portfolio funding and commercial targets as agreed in the Division
• Ensure that the division is financially sustainable by securing sufficient revenue from contract resource and commercial projects and by controlling expenditure.
HUMAN RESOUCE
• Ensure the correct skills mix to give effect to the division’s business plan and strategy and that the talent required in the division is retained through clear career paths and mentorship programmes.
• Ensure succession planning so that there is always the requisite skills for the department to function optimally
• Create an environment that is conducive to the retention of essential skills
• See to the adequacy of training and development for members of the division.
NETWORKING
• Maintain national and international collaboration with research networks
• Seek out opportunities to commercialize research outcomes
• Form partnerships and collaboration to ensure participation on large integrated projects to get access to expertise not currently in the division and to improve the skills of the team.
GOVERNANCE AND RISK
• Ensure compliance with SHEQ requirements
• Ensure compliance with the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).
• Ensure compliance with the internal audit requirements of the organisation.
• Ensure compliance with the policies and procedures in order that the division gets clean audits.
RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT AND REPORTING
• High level stakeholder engagement, including stakeholder management and satisfaction for both
internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum requirements

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND REQUIREMENTS:
 
 Ten years relevant experience or more, of which 5 years must be in a managerial experience.
 Significant relevant industry knowledge and experience.
 Experience in managing people.
 Track record in leading commercialisation of RDI outputs.
 Experience in national and international business engagement and operations management.
 Strategic development and implementation.
 Technology and IP management and commercialization.
 Business and financial management.
 Leadership of people and operations management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
 Masters Degree in Geology or relevance
 PhD relevant scientific field relating to the Mineralogy Disciplines
