POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW
REF: PMD/2025/CMSModel
PYROMETALLURGY DIVISION
(For Internal and External Candidates)
PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE JOB: The Pyrometallurgy Division seeks to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to conduct research in computational materials science modelling in pyrometallurgy. The position will focus on developing computational materials science models to enhance our understanding the thermophysical and thermochemical properties of both conventional and non-conventional slag systems pertinent to pyrometallurgy. The role requires a strong understanding of computational materials chemistry, thermochemistry, phase equilibria, reaction kinetics, and engineering design fundamentals. Contributing to human capital development through coaching and mentoring, willingness to work towards a common purpose, strong sense of equity and inclusion, and the ability to respond to supervision, guidance and direction in a positive and receptive manner are non-negotiable attributes of the roles.

KEY PERFOMANCE INDICATORS:
· Strong understanding of computational materials science modelling using both ab initio and molecular dynamics methods, and their application to the calculation of thermodynamic and transport properties of high-temperature metallurgical systems in solid and liquid states.
· Proven experience with open source computational materials science tools such as LAMMPS, DL-POLY, Quantum Espresso, or similar.
· Demonstrated ability to conceptualise and deliver high impact research.
· Strong portfolio of publications in peer-reviewed journals is a distinct advantage.
· Experience with pyrometallurgical process software and design tools such as PyroSim™, FactSage™ or similar is an added advantage.
· Experience with software automation and scripting languages such as Python is an added advantage.
· Knowledge of technology transfer, commercialisation and product development is highly advantageous.
· Demonstrated ability to attract own research funding is highly advantageous.
QUALIFICATION AND JOB KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
· Minimum PhD in Engineering (Metallurgical/Chemical/Process), Materials Science, Materials Chemistry or equivalent, with a strong emphasis on modelling skills of relevance to pyrometallurgy research and technology development.
· Ideally, one year postdoctoral research experience, with strong emphasis on computational materials science modelling.
· Familiarity with high performance computing and the use of shared/remote computational resources is desirable.
· Professional recognition and registration are an added advantage.
· Experience with postgraduate supervision is an added advantage.
BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
· Team player who enjoys variety and has a strong affinity for planning and conducting new and innovative projects.
· Passion for research, technology development and technology transfer.
· Good interpersonal skills.
· Ability to work in a stressful and demanding environment.
· Willing to travel locally and internationally.
· Prepared to work shifts in hot and dusty plant environments when required.
· Ability to independently engage with industry leaders, operators and high-level international partners.
PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATES MUST SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING AS ONE DOCUMENT:
- Comprehensive curriculum vitae, including academic records and R&D outputs.
