Job description

KEY PERFOMANCE INDICATORS:
 
Perform routine on allocated work.
  • Successfully performs fusion and dissolution procedures on allocated samples.
  • Perform analysis of the samples prepared by using techniques such as gravimetric analysis, AAS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS and Able to identify sample material according to matrix and apply appropriate analytical procedures.  
  • Perform high temperature fusion at fire assay to extract gold and precious elements and platinum group elements.
  • Adhere to turnaround times of the samples as per the group requirements.
  • Interacts (in consultation with supervisor) with chief investigators from metallurgical divisions regarding project requirements.

Maintains section’s technical competence.
  • Ensure that training is provided continuously by identifying training requirements, participating in training to obtain competence and maintaining it.
  • Use equipment appropriately to achieve desired quality results by performing qualitative and quantitatively of precious metal-containing materials.
  • Participate in annual competency test to maintain the learned skills.
  • Training the internship students and new personnel as required by the supervisor, the head or the executive manager.
  • Perform method development and method validations.
  • Must be able to work independently and flexibly and to adapt to changing priorities such as work standby and overtime.
  • Interpret data according to the set quality protocols and metallurgical recipes.
  • Write technical reports such as investigation reports, technical notes and method validation.
  • Performs major equipment troubleshooting reliably to solve faults or deviations.
  • Perform routine maintenance of instruments as per ACD SOPs and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Reports and discusses any anomalies and deviations observed on the methods, procedures and results with the group’s Technical Supervisor and Head.
  • Voluntarily presents informative technical topics at divisional general meetings.
  • Actively participates in technical discussions and makes informed suggestions.
  • Obtain and maintain the SANAS technical signatory status.

Participate in proficiency testing schemes
  • Actively participate in the PT scheme program when required.
  • Perform corrective action on PT scheme results that have not pass the requirements.

Adherence to SHEQ standards
  • Ensures that the samples are properly managed to reduce the risk of sample contamination, mix ups or misplacements.
  • Actively participates in SHEQ duties and attends all relevant meetings.
  • Practices Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) by ensuring that all work areas, balance rooms and the general laboratory are kept clean.
  • Strives to meet the objectives of the group by observing the quality, safety and environmental standards set out by the division.
  • Wearing of PPE at all times when performing allocated work.

Relationship management and reporting
  • Actively report to the Head of the group in all lab activities.

Minimum requirements

EXPERIENCE:
  • 3-5 year’s vocational experience following first graduation (BSc Hons or BTech or equivalent).
  • In-depth knowledge of analysis of inorganic samples by ICP-OES, ICP-MS, XRF and AAS
  • Minimum of 3 years working experience in ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
  • In depth knowledge of fire assay processes including raw materials
  • Willing to work shift as required in projects

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum: BTech or Postgraduate Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or BSc degree in Chemistry
  • Ideal: BSc (Hons) Degree in Chemistry advantageous
  • Ideal: On-the-job training gained after graduation
