Job description

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW

REF: PMD/2025/CFDModel

PYROMETALLURGY DIVISION

 (For Internal and External Candidates)

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Pyrometallurgy Division seeks to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to conduct research in CFD modelling of pyrometallurgical processes. The position will focus on developing computational multiphysics and reduced-order models to solve complex coupled problems in pyrometallurgy. Special attention will be required for problems involving fluid flow, chemical reactions, and heat transfer.

The role requires a strong understanding of computational fluid dynamics modelling, thermochemistry, phase equilibria, reaction kinetics, and engineering design fundamentals. Contributing to human capital development through coaching and mentoring, willingness to work towards a common purpose, strong sense of equity and inclusion, and the ability to respond to supervision, guidance and direction in a positive and receptive manner are non-negotiable attributes of the role.

KEY PERFOMANCE INDICATORS:

·         Strong understanding of computational multiphysics and reduced order modelling in problems involving fluid flow, heat transfer, and chemical reactions.

·         Proven experience with open source computational multiphysics modelling tools such as OpenFOAM®.

·         Proven experience with software development languages such as C and Python.

·         Demonstrated ability to conceptualise and deliver high impact research.

·         Strong portfolio of publications in peer-reviewed journals is a distinct advantage.

·      Experience with pyrometallurgical process software and design tools such as PyroSim™, FactSage™ or similar is a distinct advantage.

·         Experience with CAD tools such as Fusion 360 or FreeCAD is an advantage.

·         Knowledge of technology transfer, commercialisation and product development is highly advantageous.

Demonstrated ability to attract own R&D funding is highly advantageous.

QUALIFICATION AND JOB KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

·         Minimum PhD in Metallurgical/Chemical/Mechanical/Process Engineering or equivalent, with a strong emphasis on modelling skills of relevance to pyrometallurgy research and technology development.

·         Ideally, one year postdoctoral research experience, with strong emphasis on computational multiphysics and reduced order modelling.

·         Familiarity with high performance computing and the use of shared/remote computational resources is desirable.

·         Professional recognition and registration are an added advantage.

·         Experience with postgraduate supervision is an added advantage.

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

·         Team player who enjoys variety and has a strong affinity for planning and conducting new and innovative projects.

·         Passion for research, technology development and technology transfer.

·         Good interpersonal skills.

·         Ability to work in a stressful and demanding environment.

·         Willing to travel locally and internationally.

·         Prepared to work shifts in hot and dusty plant environments when required.

·         Ability to independently engage with industry leaders, operators and high-level international partners.

PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATES MUST SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING AS ONE DOCUMENT:

  • Comprehensive curriculum vitae, including academic records and R&D outputs.
  • Certified copy of doctoral certificate (or letter from the university confirming meeting of Ph.D. requirements).
  • Cover letter motivating the application.
  • Two (2) reference/support letters (one must be from the Ph.D. supervisor).

SALARY PACKAGE: NEGOTIABLE

                                                   CLOSING DATE: 30 JANUARY 2025

Please apply via the Mintek website at www.mintek.co.za
