POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW

REF: BMD/2024

BIOMETALLURGY DIVISION

 (For Internal and External Candidates)

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

 The successful candidate will be based full-time in the Bioprocessing Group in the Biometallurgy Division and will be expected to provide scientific inputs to and perform research in the areas of:

·         Molecular biology tools and techniques relating to bioprocesses

·         Bioprocess microbiology and microbial consortia

KEY PERFOMANCE INDICATORS:

 

·       He/she is aware of trends in the relevant field, and is able to formulate ideas relating to technical projects, frame and develop research questions, design experiments, identify problems, and evaluate and implement solutions.

·         Play a leading role in the execution of work within the division/group.

·         Operational: Establish specifications, improve workflows, and introduce operating procedures – project level.

 

Research and Development

·         Prepare research proposals under direct supervision, including Open Call proposals.

·         Perform routine scientific research using standard methods, procedures and equipment, with limited supervision.

·         Participate in development and validation of molecular techniques and tools for monitoring of Mintek’s Bioprocesses.

·         Characterisation of complex microbial consortia, with variable process conditions.

·         Training of junior scientific staff members.

·         Contributor to IP development, where applicable.

·      Design and conduct molecular experimental work and ensure that procedures are complied with, and quality control and continual improvement are applied.

·         Collect and interpret data at a quantitative and qualitative level using discipline specific standard methodologies and procedures. Including the preparation of analytical and descriptive narratives.  Ensure that the interpretation is based on sound scientific theory.

·         Plan and manage projects to ensure efficient use of time, equipment and facilities, including coordinating with others.

·      Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies, promote continual improvement in the workplace, adhere to and enforce all SHEQ requirements.

  

QUALIFICATION AND JOB KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

·         Min: PhD (final thesis comments accepted)

·         At least 1 – 2 years laboratory experience, in microbiological and molecular research in a bioprocessing field.

·         Foundation in biological statistics

·         Exposure to molecular techniques, including PCR, DNA sequencing, gel electrophoresis, microscope imaging skills, primer design.

·         Ideal: Computational biology background.

SALARY PACKAGE: NEGOTIABLE
