Introduction
Mintek has an exciting career opportunity for an Executive Manager: Biometallurgy. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that the Biometallurgy Division is managed in a manner that delivers sustainably on its mandate, including strategic and operational plans:
• To lead the Division technically, including developing the Division’s RDI strategy.
• To ensure the alignment of the Division strategy and plans with those of the Mintek strategy.
• To maintain a balanced Divisional RDI portfolio.
• To prepare and implement operational and business plans for the Division.
• To lead stakeholder engagements with industry, HEI’s, public sector and international entities.
• To be accountable for the Division’s sustainability, including financial, human resources, SHEQ, risks and delivery.
Job description
LEADERSHIP
- Ethical leadership
- Stakeholder relations management to ensure that cooperation is obtained in fulfilling the Division’s mandate.
- Ensure the alignment of the divisional strategy with Mintek’s mandate and the strategies of external stakeholders e.g. government departments.
- Ensure that all the activities undertaken by Biometallurgy Division support the beneficiation aspect of the overall Mintek strategy.
PEOPLE AND PLANNING
- Ensure that the necessary resources are allocated to all the activities required to give effect to the strategy and the activities in the Division.
- Ensure that the competent talent required in the department is retained through clear career paths.
- Ensure that there is an adequate pipeline of commercial and business leads to ensure that the Division can deliver on its targets.
- Contribute to the refinement and development of the Cluster strategy and plans.
- Ensure that there is a divisional marketing plan in place, which identifies the market requirements and match these to technologies developed in the division.
- Ensure publications in peer-reviewed journals and participation in conferences, symposia to market the division’s technologies and skills.
- Maintain national and international collaboration with research networks.
- Seek out opportunities to commercialize research outcomes.
GOVERNANCE
- Risk profiling and ensure compliance to the ISO Standards and Regulations.
- Adhere to all Mintek’s policies and ethics.
FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY
- Drive the Division’s financial sustainability through effective operations.
- Balance the RDI portfolio funding and commercial targets as agreed in the Division.
- Ensure that the Division revenue streams are diverse.
RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
- Develop and maintain sound relationships with stakeholders to remain globally relevant.
- Take responsibility for commercialisation and technology transfer management for the Division.
- Keep employees engaged by maintaining an environment in which they thrive and succeed.
PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT
- Undertake performance management for the Division.
- Ensure that all the work produced by the division meets the highest standards possible.
- Ensure that the work produced through research and development has the potential for commercialisation
Minimum requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ideal: PhD in relevant field of science related to the divisional activities, preferably Chemical/Metallurgical engineering, Biohydrometallurgy, Hydrometallurgy, Bioprocessing or Biotechnology.
- Minimum: Master’s degree in Chemical/Metallurgical engineering, Biohydrometallurgy, Hydrometallurgy, Bioprocessing or Biotechnology
- At least 10 years’ experience in the field of which 5 years must be in a research management position.
- Experience in financial, HR, business processes, marketing, operations, and business development.
- Experience in business engagements and commercialization activities.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, good management and leadership skills, self-driven, people skills and strategic thinking.
