Technician-In-Training  

Hydrometallurgy Division

OBJECTIVE:

To appoint a technician-in-training internally to assist in the design, commissioning, and operation of pilot scale facilities in the Hydrometallurgy Division. Reporting to the Head of Metal Recovery and Remediation, the successful candidate must assume an active role in the operation of laboratory and pilot-scale Testwork. Willingness to work towards a common purpose, and ability to respond to supervision, guidance and direction in a positive and receptive manner are non-negotiable attributes of the role.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

  • Assist, under supervision, in the commissioning and operation of pilot scale facilities in the Hydrometallurgy Division.
  • Actively participate in the execution of pilot plant projects in line with specific project modification requirements.
  • Assisting in housekeeping, preparation of bulk samples, preparation facilities and handling and processing of solid and effluent materials in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Prepare equipment and facilities for use and check the operability of standard equipment and facilities to ensure that they are ready for use.
  • Provide technical and procedural advice to staff on how to operate equipment, which equipment settings are optimal, etc., involved. This includes providing training on experimental, SHEQ and administrative procedures.
  • Conceptualize and develop proposals and quotations for internal and commercial clients, and ensure timely execution of projects, both at laboratory and pilot scale facilities.
  • Exercise a high level of diligence to ensure a high level of productivity, output, and cost management.

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Minimum National Diploma in Metallurgical/Chemical/Mechanical/Process Engineering or equivalent, with a strong emphasis on hydrometallurgy research and technology development.
  • Ideally, Bachelor of Technology degree in Metallurgical/Chemical/Mechanical/Process Engineering or equivalent, with a strong emphasis on hydrometallurgy research and technology development.
  • Internship experience, with strong emphasis on hydrometallurgy research and technology development, is highly advantageous.
  • Must have worked for at least 5 months on hydrometallurgy pilot campaigns.

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Team player who enjoys variety and has a strong affinity for planning and conducting new and innovative projects.
  • Passion for hydrometallurgy research, technology development and technology transfer.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a stressful and demanding environment.
  • Willing to travel locally and internationally.
  • Prepared to work shifts in hot and dusty plant environments when required
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.

SALARY PACKAGE: Negotiable
