An exciting career opportunity exists at Mintek for an Operator: Applied Chemical Analysis Group within the Analytical Chemistry Division for internal candidates only. The candidate will ensure general conditions of all the laboratories in the division are kept up to standard.
Job description

KEY PERFOMANCE AREAS:
The following Key Performance areas are mandatory to the post:
  • Assist in sample collection and suitability for analysis.
  • Support the Sample Reception, Scientists and Lab Technicians with recording the weights of the samples on LIMS before and after analysis.
  • Manage the chemical storage and chemical inventory.
  • Monitors stock levels of chemical inventory in area of responsibility.
  • Responsible for ensuring availability of clean glassware to quality specifications.
  • Ensure there is no contamination of the glassware by separating high grade from low grade.
  • Responsible for the overall integrity of the chemical stores.
  • Apply a system to pack glassware away using safety measures and precautions.
  • Dispose of cracked glassware into the applicable bin.
  • Ensure that equipment (Washer) is maintained according to defined SOP and prepare reagents and media.
  • Must have experience with monitoring of consumables.
  • Check the operability of standard equipment’s to ensure that they are ready for use
Stock Management
  • Ensure chemical inventory and stock taking is continuously monitored and updated.
  • Maintain cleanliness, orderliness, and supplies.
  • Assist in sample movement to relevant storage facilities
Sample preparation
  • Assist in sample preparation when required: by weighing samples and following SOP and instruction by supervisor.
  • Document all activities.
  • Safe Operation of Simple Equipment.
  • Operate all equipment safely based on training and written SOP’s.
  • Report all equipment problems timely and maintain equipment records.
  • Conform to all relevant SHEQ rules.
  • Conform to all relevant SHEQ procedures, guidelines and rules, direct training is given to all, workplace inspections are conducted to ensure compliance and SHEQ briefings are regularly conducted on new issues.
Carry out and maintain good housekeeping practices.
  • Performs general tasks necessary for daily operation of the laboratory.
  • Collects, prepares, cleans, and stores glassware and other lab equipment.
  • Maintains chemical records and files.
  • Sets up laboratory and research equipment as directed by supervisor.
  • Assists research and laboratory personnel with experiments and procedures. Performs related responsibilities as required.
  • Disposal of general laboratory waste
  • Coordinates with quality Officer for disposal of cyanide and organic waste.
  • Keep divisional chillers in the roof clean.
  • Always practice good housekeeping and safe working procedures, under guidance and supervision of a superior, including safe stacking of samples, correct disposal of waste solid samples, keeping roads,walkways etc. clear of samples.
  • Always keep workplace and communal facilities clean and tidy.
  • Observe good time keeping practices.
  • Observe time keeping rules and leave procedures, following training.
  • Work shifts and overtime when necessary, during research/production pilot plant campaigns.

Minimum requirements

Qualification and Job knowledge/ Skills Required
  • Grade 12
  • Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in housekeeping.
Competency required
  • Basic proficiency in using computers, including software applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Should undertake data management and reporting, including compiling logsheets and spreadsheets.
Behavioural Competencies
  • Self-driven.
  • Ability to multi task.
  • Ability to cope in a stressful and demanding environment.
  • Good Interpersonal skills
