Introduction
Mintek has an exciting career opportunity for a Technical Specialist in the Biometallurgy Division who will assist the divisional manager by active participation in promoting the division’s technical services; and obtain sufficient business from, and in collaboration with, other governmental departments, science councils and the mining / metallurgical industry. Also actively participate in the execution thereof at a high technical level.
Job description
- Assist the divisional manager by active participation in promoting the division’s technical services; and obtain sufficient business from, and in collaboration with, other governmental departments, science councils and the mining / metallurgical industry. Also actively participate in the execution thereof at a high technical level.
- Ascertain needs and trends in the metallurgical / minerals processing industry, and develop and execute appropriate research programmes to ensure long-term sustainability of the division by ensuring innovative and relevant R&D is undertaken aimed at maintaining and improving its current technologies and producing also new technologies in line with the division’s long-term plans.
- Provide sound technical expertise and guidance with respect to general hydrometallurgical practise and, more specifically, in the areas of tank bioleaching, heap bioleaching, heap leaching and heap hydraulics.
- Lead a group of scientists and engineers in the execution of major technical projects in which interactions with clients and technical experts are required at an expert technical level.
- Strengthen and expand the division’s technical abilities and capacity.
- Remain informed at an expert technical level with technology and business in the areas of the division’s work.
- Must have the skill to write applications for research grants both locally and internationally, as well as commercial proposals.
- Prepare and monitor project plans and budgets, and produce professional technical reports, journal articles, papers and presentations at local and international conferences, intellectual property, etc.
- Ensure that safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) procedures are strictly adhered to and that project work is executed with maximum overall technical efficiency.
- Supervise and provide guidance, mentorship and training to the division members.
- Demonstrate through behaviour the values and vision of Mintek thereby promoting discipline, competence, confidence and harmony within the division.
Minimum requirements
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- More than 15 years’ relevant research involvement and outputs in an R&D environment.
- More than 15 years’ relevant commercial services experience.
- Good academic record.
- Sound project management skills.
- Internationally recognised in the fields of heap bioleaching, heap leaching and heap hydraulics.
- Excellent communication, report writing and presentation skills.
- Excellent technical track record.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergraduate: B Eng (chemical or metallurgical)
- Post graduate: M Eng (chemical or metallurgical)
- Post graduate: D Eng (chemical or metallurgical) or PhD (chemical or metallurgical engineering); or registered and well advanced in the process of obtaining any of these degrees.
