The incumbent will be required to lead and manage a group of engineers, scientists, technicians, operators, interns and students in the execution of technical projects in which interactions with clients and technical experts are required at professional level.
Job description
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
- Assume the line management duties and responsibilities of the Head: Process Design group within the Biometallurgy Division.
- Lead and manage a group of engineers, scientists, technicians, operators, interns and students in the execution of technical projects in which interactions with clients and technical experts are required at professional level.
- Assume responsibility for the administration, discipline, coaching / mentoring / training, guidance, performance management, supervision and recruitment of subordinate personnel.
- Assist the divisional manager to source project work from the mining / minerals processing industry, in line with the division's long-term objectives, by providing professional expertise and interaction with clients at an expert technical level.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance to the group and division in areas such as bioheap and heap leaching of low-grade base metals, precious metals and uranium bearing ores.
- Ascertain needs and trends in the industry, and develop and execute appropriate research programs to ensure long-term sustainability of the group by ensuring innovative and relevant R&D is undertaken aimed at maintaining current technologies and producing new technologies in line with the division’s long-term plans.
- Remain informed at an expert technical level with the technologies and business in the areas of the group’s work.
- Ensure that the group’s undertakings are aligned and in support of the division’s overall business plan.
- Strengthen and expand the group’s technical abilities and capacity.
- Prepare and monitor project plans and budgets; and ensure the delivery of professional technical reports, papers and presentations at local and international conferences.
- Ensure that safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) procedures are strictly adhered to and that project work is executed with maximum overall technical efficiency.
- Demonstrate through behaviour the values and vision of Mintek thereby promoting discipline, competence, confidence and harmony within the group and division.
Minimum requirements
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience in bioheap and heap leaching metallurgical testwork practise: 10 years or more.
- Experience as chief investigator of large, multi-disciplined commercial projects where bioheap or heap leaching of low-grade ores form the major component of the project; these projects are usually multi-phased (i.e. run over several years to completion): 3 to 5 years.
- Good administrative skills.
- Excellent project management skills.
- Sound knowledge and hands-on experience of Mintek’s logistical systems.
- Proven above-average external client feedback record (client communication / surveys).
- Good communication, laboratory / pilot facility practise, metallurgical accounting, proposal / technical report writing and presentation skills.
- Leadership skills and experience of managing project teams consisting of engineers, scientists, technicians, operators and students in a commercial services and applied research environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum requirement: MSc (Metallurgy)
